Setting Up a Virtual Machine


Minimum Requirements

  • Windows XP - 512MB RAM
  • Windows 7 and 8 - 1GB RAM
  • Windows 10 - 1.5GB RAM
  • Linux - 512MB RAM

Downloading an Operating System

  • For Windows operating systems, head over to https://dev.modern.ie/tools/vms/ and download the virtual machine image of your choice. These images are distributed by Microsoft and have a time limit of 90 days.
  • For Linux operating systems, head over to the Linux operating system website of your choice and download the iso or image.

Setting up the Virtual Machine

  1. Download and install a virtual machine client of your choice. VirtualBox (Windows, Mac, or Linux) or Parallels (Mac)
  2. For a Windows operating system, you will double click on the downloaded file or within VirtualBox, Import Appliance. Follow the steps and you should have a Windows Virtual machine up and running in no time.
  3. For a Linux operating system, Create a new virtual machine, select Linux as the operating system, and select the image you downloaded earlier. It will run through the install. Follow the steps and you will have a freshly running Linux virtual machine running in no time.
